Why Email Open Rates Are No Longer a Reliable Statistic — And What It Means for Marketers

Engage your audience and achieve your marketing goals.

Email open rates have been a staple metric in digital marketing dashboards for years. They offered an easy, at-a-glance indication of how well your subject line performed, how engaged your audience might be, and how your list hygiene was tracking. But in today’s privacy-conscious digital world, relying on open rates is not just outdated — it’s misleading.

What Changed?

The death knell for open rate reliability came with Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection (MPP), launched in late 2021. This feature automatically preloads email content (including tracking pixels) whether or not a user actually opens the email. As a result, many marketers saw an immediate spike in open rates, but this wasn’t driven by better subject lines or smarter segmentation. It was inflated data.

Combined with other growing privacy protections from platforms like Gmail and the broader shift away from third-party data, open rates are no longer a trustworthy performance measure.

Why This Matters

1. Inflated Metrics = Misguided Decisions
If you’re making decisions based on open rates — like A/B test winners, campaign timing, or list segmentation — you’re optimising based on false positives. That can lead to lower engagement and a poor customer experience.

2. Misaligned Reporting
Your stakeholders may think your emails are performing better than they actually are, simply because your report shows a healthy open rate. But behind that façade, your clicks, conversions, and revenue may be lagging.

3. Poor Audience Insights
Open rates once helped us understand which segments of an audience were active and engaged. Now, with MPP and similar features obscuring real behaviour, we lose that clarity — unless we pivot our tracking approach.

What Should Marketers Focus On Instead?

Here’s how smart marketers are adapting:

Click-Through Rates (CTR)

Clicks are a concrete, intentional action. Focus your campaign analysis around how many people are engaging with your content — not just seeing it.

Conversions & Revenue

Your end goal isn’t opens — it’s impact. Measure what actually matters: donations, sales, registrations, sign-ups, or other meaningful conversions.

List Engagement Over Time

Rather than relying on opens to identify “unengaged” subscribers, look at longer-term engagement across multiple campaigns: clicks, conversions, and even website behaviour if integrated.

Preference Centres

Invite your audience to tell you what they want. A well-designed preference centre allows subscribers to control frequency, topic interest, and channel — leading to stronger engagement and less reliance on guesswork.

Quality Content and Testing

Now more than ever, good content wins. Test subject lines, body content, and CTAs based on actual engagement — not superficial open data. Use holdout groups and direct response metrics to determine effectiveness.
